BHOPAL: Emphasising the need to prioritise education, chief minister
Kamal Nath on Wednesday said, “We are focusing on developing functional literacy at school levels to equip children with practical application of academic theory blending technology, arts and sciences.”
The chief minister was addressing a gathering at the two-day STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics) conclave at Minto Hall.
The event was attended by educators, professionals and heads of different schools. The chief minister said, “When
Rajiv Gandhi encouraged use of computer technology, it was not easily accepted at first … gradually the country transformed through creation of quality employment in IT sectors. Similarly, there is a need to upgrade our teaching methods in accordance with the changing needs of the world. Not just academic growth but overall development should be the priority.”
School education minister Prabhuram Chaudhary said, “Through discussions with such a diverse panel we aim at starting important conversation on education.” He added, by introducing new teaching techniques our focus would be on developing problem solving skills among children that will equip them to take on the challenges of the world.”
Founder of STEAM, Georgette Yakman said, “This model (STEAM) is based on developing scientific temper among young kids with in arts, mathematics and technology.” STEAM education provides the framework used for connecting the growing network of educational disciplines, businesses, and communities to create adaptable citizen-involved, globally-responsible, reality-based programs.
